Inspiration from (The Dawn Wall & Free Solo)

IIf you haven’t seen either of these two documentaries featuring professional rock climbers who set out to do the impossible, I highly recommend watching these two mind-blowing films. In The Dawn Wall, Tommy Caldwell and his partner Kevin Jorgeson completely captivated me with their physical and mental efforts to attempt to climb the Dawn Wall of El Captan which is a 3,000 foot straight wall of rock.

Free Solo features professional rock climber, Alex Honnold who attempts to conquer the first free solo climb of El Capitan (that means with NO ROPES!!!!). So if he falls, he dies.

I won’t spoil these films for you, but what I do want to highlight is that both of these films really capture extreme examples of what it takes to do something impossible. All three men faced:

FEAR

DOUBT

CONFUSION

TRAGEDY

SELF-PITY

FAILURE

"You deal with the fear because the goal requires it"

One of my favorite lines from FREE SOLO

When setting an impossible goal, whether that’s to make 1 million dollars in your business, to lose 50 pounds, or climb El Capitan, you must be willing to fail your way there. You are not going to fail in the taking of the action, but you might fail in the result you want to create.

Let’s say you want to lose weight and you set out to eat clean, workout for 60 minutes, each day, and drink 10 glasses of water. You do this for several days in a row, and when you step on the scale, you don’t lose weight. What most people will do here is get upset and quit. What I encourage instead, is to say that’s OK, continue to take action (eat clean, workout, drink water), continue to believe in your impossible goal (I am doing this no matter what) and continue to fail your way there. You see when we fail, we get feedback on what isn’t working, and then we make the necessary adjustments. When we indulge in doubt, confusion, self-pity, and fear and don’t take action, we fail ahead of time and never reach our impossible goal.

So I ask you: Are you willing to keep taking the action even if you fail in the result you want to create? Are you willing to keep “failing” all the way until you get there?

We are often taught that failure is bad, so we don’t attempt things unless we know we can succeed. But what I have learned is that the most successful people embrace failure and plan to fail often.

This is what is required to achieve something impossible.

If you need a little inspiration then watch one of these 2 films.
