No one taught me to how to think...

Up until the age of 22, no one had sat me down and taught me how to think. I was taught how to walk, talk, ride a bike, math, but not how to think.

For years I was at the whim of each and every emotion - a rollercoaster of highs and lows with no safety bar.  As a teenager, I was swallowed up by all the circumstances that I thought were causing my pain and working against me coupled with fluctuations in hormones and mood. I was the victim in so many situations. I blamed others for how I felt. I had no ability to create emotions on purpose, and spent years seeking external validation.

Most likely because of this emotional turmoil, I had an internal drive to study the mind. I dove into philosophy, psychology and even spent a weekend at a Tony Robbins seminar, yet I still didn’t understand how to think and the importance of managing my thoughts.

I still remember the moment I learned that my thoughts created my feelings and not my circumstances. It was as if I was let in on a special universal secret. I remember the moment. A professor passed out a paper and asked his students to tell him the most recent time we were upset about something, really upset. We all took pen to paper and wrote eagerly about some injustice. We were all convinced in our outrage, and one by one he showed us how it wasn’t what had happened that made us upset but rather our thoughts about it.

I remember feeling like I had been punked. All those times I had felt hurt, disappointed, angry were all a result of my own thinking? What?!? I couldn’t accept it at first. This lead to 2 solid years of studying cognitive behavioral therapy, abnormal psychology, and advanced philosophy in some partial attempt to find a different, more technical explanation.

Let self-coaching be your anchor

Years later, I would dive deep into self-development and learn once again the importance of being aware of your thinking. Once I internalized these concepts and the Life Coach School Model I had an anchor. When situations occur that by default create a lot of negative emotion, I am able to see what my thoughts create. Thoughts create our results and the ability to be aware of this and pivot when necessary has changed everything.

When you know how to create emotions, ON PURPOSE you attract so much more of what you want into your life. Like attracts like, and creating emotions deliberately leads to success. In addition, being able to allow any emotion has decreased the need to replace them with junk food, alcohol, shopping etc.

When storms hit, self-coaching can be your anchorThinking about your own thinking is the most powerful practice you can develop. I want to help you use your mind vs. letting your mind use you.

Take 5-10 minutes a day to get your thoughts out on paper. Examine how they make you feel, what you do when you feel this way and the results of these actions on you. Deepen this awareness and so much can change.

If you want me to teach you how to think, how to manage your thoughts and feelings, don’t hesitate to reach out. This will be the best course you will ever take in life.
