My Word for the Year: Appreciation
Every January, I choose a word to guide my year—a word that becomes an anchor for my intentions and actions. This year, I wrestled with a few options, but one word rose to the surface: appreciation.
At first, I leaned toward the word gratitude. Gratitude is beautiful—it’s that spontaneous feeling of joy and thankfulness when something wonderful happens. But as I reflected more deeply, I realized I wanted something more deliberate.
Appreciation is defined as “recognition and enjoyment of the good qualities of someone or something.” Unlike gratitude, which often arrives unbidden, appreciation is a choice—a conscious act of noticing and valuing what’s around you, even in the small, mundane moments.
For me, this distinction matters. Appreciation challenges me to actively engage with my life, to pause and look for the beauty, lessons, and growth that exist even on the harder days. It’s about deliberately slowing down to savor what I might otherwise rush past.
Why Choose a Word for the Year?
Having a word for the year is more than just a nice idea—it’s a way to stay grounded and intentional. It becomes a touchstone, reminding you of what you want to embody and create as the months unfold.
But here’s the thing: life moves fast, and it’s easy to forget about that word you chose with so much hope and intention. That’s why I encourage keeping your word visible—write it on a sticky note for your mirror, set it as your phone wallpaper, or make it part of your daily journaling practice.
This simple act of visibility makes your word not just an idea, but a guide you can come back to over and over.
