Why Slowing Down is the Real Power Move
“Slow down in your pursuit of happiness, and it's more likely to catch up with you.” - Ernie J Zelinski
Many of us have been conditioned to glorify speed—whether it’s in winning a race, finishing a task, or hitting our next career milestone. While being efficient and productive are valuable traits, rushing often leads to stress, mistakes, and burnout.
When we rush, physical stress floods our body—tense muscles, clenched jaws, racing hearts—and emotionally, we become frustrated and anxious. This state is the opposite of the clear, focused energy we need to succeed. Think about the last time you were in a rush—did it feel good? Was the outcome as positive as you hoped?
Sure, there are moments when rushing is necessary—like making a flight or handling an urgent task—but living in a constant hurry isn’t sustainable. It can erode both our physical and mental well-being.
Instead, what if you saw rushing as an invitation to slow down? You can reduce errors, remember important details, and even savor the moment by intentionally shifting gears. Running late? Be kind to yourself, reflect on how you can plan better next time, and choose to approach the day with calm.
High achievers often fall into the trap of thinking speed equals success. But I’ve found that slowing down and truly enjoying the process leads to more fulfillment and joy. If you frequently feel rushed, ask yourself why. Is it a time management issue, or are you comparing yourself to others? The solution might be as simple as finding a rhythm that works for you.
